Smart Traffic Management and Mobility
We work with traffic authorities across the world to develop strategies that maintain free flow of traffic and people movement. Our diverse portfolio of innovative smart mobility solutions is enabling major global cities to better manage their roads and respond to traffic conditions.
City planners gain accurate insights on vehicle movements and road capacity using our wired and wireless traffic control systems. Our fully integrated smart platforms play critical roles in regulating traffic flow on freeways, tunnels and even arterial roads.
Currently, our SCATS Adaptive Traffic Control System and our Meridian Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) control road traffic at more than 35,000 intersections, motorways and tunnels in over 250 cities.
We also help make pavements safer for pedestrians and roads less congested for motorists. Travelers are able to plan their routes, thanks to the availability of timely data on traffic and public transportation. Parking violations are reduced with our embedded edge systems and intelligent video analytics that detect offenses in real time.
Smart traffic management and mobility is an indispensable part of transforming into a smart city.
Smart Street Lighting System Integrator
We design and integrate smart infrastructure with a people-first focus. Partnering with leading edge smart street lighting solutions providers, we empower urban planners with full control over city-wide lighting infrastructure in real-time, while having a bird eye’s of the surroundings and traffic conditions. With LED technology, our street lighting solution helps smart cities reduce energy consumption by 25 percent.
Our intelligent solution combines the use of smart controls and advanced communication technologies to provide lighting service that is more responsive to citizens’ needs. Street lights can adapt the light level when necessary to provide optimized illumination to motorists and pedestrians. Maintenance of street light infrastructure is simplified as our system features automated fault detection capability that alerts city authorities of anomalies promptly.
Smart street lamps offer new methods for information collection and traffic safety monitoring. The built-in sensors on our street lighting solution help city planners collect data to improve the efficiency of transport networks and increase the safety of roads, urban areas and residential neighborhoods.
To date, Johnson Controls provides smart street lighting solution that is used to remotely control and monitor streetlights in major smart cities like Singapore using wireless technology.
Smart Airport Terminals
Airports —big or small— are focused on security, comfort, cost optimization, and sustainability. Given today’s uncertainties, airport management are redoubling efforts to ensure their facilities are running at the highest levels of safety, efficiency, reliability, and viability.
Airport managers and staff need access to accurate data to make critical business and operational decisions. Our intelligent technologies allow airport terminals to effectively introduce automated, contactless solutions that address heightened concerns for privacy, screening, cleanliness, hygiene, and indoor air quality.
Our airport solutions are found in major aviation hubs around the world. We help airport management find ways to enhance passenger experience, and to meet the diverse needs of tenants and employees within the facilities.
We are continually expanding our portfolio of intelligent solutions and systems that allows airports to be more agile in response to evolving demands. Our expertise in technology integration forms the platform that underpins the delivery of smart infrastructure and predictive analytics to enrich user experience, boost business performance, and improve space utilization.
Every day, airport executives and staff meet the needs of a population the size of a city. They are responsible for assuring the safety and comfort of passengers, employees, and visitors. So, it’s critical that airport facilities operate at the highest levels of efficiency and reliability.
Johnson Controls provides technology solutions that improve passenger satisfaction and security, while enhancing business operations. We take a holistic approach and offer a single point of responsibility for the design, integration, and ongoing performance of all the systems in an airport facility. This means we can make a bigger impact on lifecycle costs, and enhance the functional capabilities of airports around the globe.
Our Metasys® building automation system is the nerve center which connects everything from airport security, fire detection, and ID access controls to flight visualization, check-in systems, and baggage handling. It also tells HVAC systems to monitor comfort and lighting levels, addresses escalators and moving walkways—all while managing the systems that maximize energy efficiency.

Today’s motorway owners face a variety of challenges: increased public awareness and demands for safety, need for performance and recovery of investments, as well as speed of technological change.
Meridian is an advanced software system for monitoring and controlling complex systems and devices specializing in management of motorways and tunnels. It is the product of many years of refinement and adaptation through listening to the needs of customers and keeping pace with leading technology.
Meridian has been used for motorway management and tunnel management systems all over the world, including New Zealand, and Australia. Applications vary in complexity ranging from tolling systems in Portugal to managing a 9Km tunnel with more than 25,000 devices in Singapore. Operators use Meridian through a rich graphical Interface (GUI) using Menu- and Mouse- driven Windows applications. This GUI, known as the Meridian Workbench, relays real-time status updates of devices through video, images and data-tables as appropriate. By using simple point-and-click, devices can be interrogated further or directly controlled. Standard Meridian Features include:
As the leader in Urban Traffic Control, we provide solutions to keep traffic moving adaptively and efficiently in urban road networks and at the same time ensuring road users are safe and well-informed.
Together with our local partners, Tyco Traffic & Transportation designs, markets, manufactures, installs, operates, maintains and supports its range of urban traffic control products/systems world-wide.
With over 40 years of experience in traffic controller design, Tyco Traffic & Transportation provides traffic control products with unmatched reliability and industry leading features. Our first micro-processor based traffic controller developed in the early 1970’s provided the distributed intelligence for spearheading the development of SCATS™ real-time adaptive urban traffic control system.
After capturing almost all of the Australian traffic controller market in the 1980’s, Tyco Traffic & Transportation began exporting SCATS™ and its range of traffic control equipment. The initial successes in Shanghai, Singapore and Hong Kong, help to rapidly expand SCATS™ system installations to the current 250+ cities in 27 countries and licensed to control over 37,000 intersections.

Managed Road Network in Singapore
Johnson Controls has provided smart traffic management solutions, including traffic light solutions for expressways and tunnels, to Singapore for more than 30 years. By 2024, two more major tunnels — the Central Expressway Tunnel (CTE) and Fort Canning Tunnel (FCT) will have new lighting equipment, such as lane use signages, that guide motorists to enter, pass through and exit the tunnels more safely and comfortably. Serving thousands of motorists daily, these two tunnels will remain fully operational throughout the three-year project period. Upon completion, motorists will benefit from new lighting devices at entry points of the CTE that provide warnings tunnel closures. Traffic controllers will be able to remotely monitor and manage in-tunnel sub-systems, such as jet fans and fire protection systems, inside FCT to ensure road safety.
